Turnarounds can be tough to play over. If you don’t nail them it can sound very strange coming back to the top of a tune. If you have questions or requests please leave them in the comments section and I will accommodate.

Points for practicing this lick:

  • Starting on the 9 of D-7
  • Going to the 3rd of A7 jumping to the b9 of A7
  • Coming down G7 diatonically to the third
  • Outlining G7 with chord tones
  • Approaching the 3rd of Cmaj7 with whole step below, to half step below

Enjoy!

Licks are powerful — but only when you know where they fit.

A single lick can inspire you… but real progress happens when you understand how licks fit into a bigger system.

The Jazz Piano Roadmap shows you how jazz pianists actually progress — and where things like licks belong inside comping, solo piano, and improvisation.

  1. Brenden: REALLY enjoying this Jazz course. To introduce myself, I am Beth Schulz. I am Steve Roach’s sister. I am classically trained, and 2 years ago got my BA in music with emphasis in piano. I love the way you have this course organized. My question is: do you have transcriptions for your early jazz LOWs? I’m interested in this one and any others in the 30’s and 40’s. It could help me see what’s going on a little bit better. I am working on lesson 10 in Level 1. Thanks so much for making this course available.

    1. That’s fantastic Beth! I miss Steve! I haven’t seen him so long due to COVID! If you speak to him tell him I say hi and sorry about his packers. 🙂 Let me look into those a little bit further and I’ll get back to you. We recently switched all the education over to a new platform so we’re still cleaning up a couple of things. So great to talk to you!
