7th chords are the essential harmonies for creating jazz music. Any time you are listening to it you can be sure you are hearing 7th chords. 

In order to be able to read any sort of jazz chart or standard, learning these types of chords is a must. Without them, you cannot play jazz. 

So… practice hard!

7th Chord Concepts

7th chords are the primary harmonies of jazz.

  • Major 7th chord = Major triad + major 7th on top

Major-7th Chord

    • Dominant 7th chords = Major triad on the bottom + Flat 7th on top

    • Minor 7th Chords = Minor Triad on bottom + flat 7th on top
