Here is a nice blues lick over the first four bars. The stand out characteristic in this is the reharm of the second measure. Instead of just making it a dominant IV7 chord or keeping it a I chord. We make it Bb7 then go to a Bb- chord and reflect this change in our line. We could also make it a Bb-7 or Bb-6 if we wanted and reflect those harmonies in our line as well. Besides this reharm there are some nice approaches and resolution to the 7th of F7 on the very last note. Enjoy!

Points for practicing this lick:

  • Reharms will change your improvisation when reflecting the chord tones and reharms
  • Look for different rhythmic approaches besides just eighth notes (Triplet approaches, sixteenth note approaches)

Enjoy!
