What does learning a tune look like?

Well for most of us it's usually a complete waste of time.

We start by sitting down at the piano and flipping to a new tune we want to learn. 

We immediately start to stumble through it, absolutely butchering the melody and chords together.

Usually spending about 2 minutes trying to figure out the voicings then feebly connect the melody with the voicings we can barely play.

Then finally after making it through the tune, which seemed like an HOUR workout at the gym with a crossfit athlete...

...we start back up at the top and ATTEMPT the same thing all over again.

This usually leads to us stopping at the second line and thinking, "Okay, I'll come back to this again later." 

If by some miracle we DO come back to it, we've already forgotten everything we did last time, and in actuality, did we barely even learn anything last time? 

This was my experience for YEARS! 

Then after teaching thousands of students, I realized that 99% of all people follow this same routine!

So the question is...how do we TRULY LEARN a tune?...rather then just wasting hours and hours simply playing through it...without retaining anything we've worked on.

Our goal is to memorize the tune and know the harmonies inside and out, and be able to play the melody like it's "Mary Had A Little Lamb"!
